Commercial Dr. Fir Restoration
Species: Vertical Grain Fir
Width: 3 1/4 inches
Finish: Penetrating Oil top coated with liquid wood wax.
Story: This Floor is one of our favorites to do. Originally, the home owner wanted to pull the carpets up and install one of our new hardwood floor lines to freshen up the apartment. However, once we realized what was underneath the carpet, we immediately convinced them to change plans and simply refinish the existing floor which was an 80 year old 3 1/4 inch vertical grain Douglas fir with 80 years of history beaten into its grains. Upon first glance, the homeowner was skeptical because of the rough condition and visible nails showing at the surface. We guaranteed that he, and more importantly his fiancee, would love the final product.
So we went to work on the restoration. Counter intuitively, the trick to delivering the best possible restoration of heritage fir is to take as little surface wood as possible. We did this and couldn’t believe the hack job that the previous sanderman had done for typical rental apartment pricing. Have a look at the “Commercial Drive Heritage Restoration DURING photo. This is floor sanding butchery at its best! Yikes! We had no choice but to break out the big machine and grind out all of those hideous sanding marks. Even after removing several decades of history, we are proud to say that the floor turned out gorgeous and retained much of its character.
