UBC Red Oak Restoration

Species: Red Oak

Width: 2 1/4 inches

Finish: Pentrating Oil

Story: This floor is one of our favorites, not just because of the beauty of the floor, but because it undergoes more stress than any hardwood floor should ever be subjected to: it is the living quarters of a 100 pound, friendly dog named Cody. Throw in an active family and we have an excellent barometer for floor finish durability. When we oil a floor, we are essentially supersaturating the wood grain with a hardening oil. This means that you are walking on the wood as oppossed to a sheet of polyurethane. So, when a 100 pound with equally imposing claws runs around, his claw marks gouge into the wood as oppossed to the sheet of polyurethane. When polyurethane is heavily scratched, it tends to look very sloppy: we think a scratched up oiled floor looks antiqued. Another benefit to oiled floors is that when an area gets exposed to water for prolonged periods of time, it can be locally treated in about 10 seconds per square foot and will blend in seamlessly. When polyurethane wears through after prolonged exposure to water, yes all of them do: check the fine print of those “lifetime warranties”, you need to resand the entire floor. We aren’t saying polyurethanes aren’t excellent floor finishes, we are just saying that for some applications they do have their limitations.

“Dear Hunter,

We write to you to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the quality of the work and the level of professionalism demonstrated as you refinished our hardwood floors in the kitchen and family room of our home. From the start, the quality of service and your prompt attention to our needs was very much appreciated. We were particularly pleased with the manner in which you did ‘whatever it took’ to work around our busy schedule with the minimum of disruption that such a project can normally visit upon a busy family household. You ensured that the project was completely finished to our discriminating standards, on time and on budget.

We were pleased that you suggested the oil finish for our floors. Your recommendation resulted in a finish that turned out to be exactly what we had imagined. The depth, clarity and warmth of the distinctive grain of our wood floors in the kitchen and family room are once again highlighted for us to enjoy.

We would highly recommend your services to anyone else who is contemplating either installing or refinishing their hardwood floors. Your high degree of professionalism should leave no concerns in anyone’s mind as to the quality of the product they will receive if and when they engage Raincoast Floors Ltd..

Thank you once again,

Yours truly,

Grant and Sandra Mebs
